Nick is a highly decorated corrections professional whose skill, competence and thorough understanding of the corrections processes and duties of Sheriff exceeds the high benchmarks necessary to keep our community safe and return offenders to our streets as productive and contributing members of our society.

          Deputy Superintendent – Hampden County Sheriff's Department  

2011 - Present

Nick administers the day-to-day operations of the facility’s most vital departments.  He is directly responsible for:

     ∗        All Inmate Housing Living Units.

     ∗     Standards & Training Department

     ∗     Inmate and Staff Wellness and the Health & Safety Department

     ∗     Staff Leadership & Development.  


Through his expectation of excellence, Nick has encouraged these departments to continuously improve upon their operations in order to guarantee the Hampden County Sheriff’s Department is offering the highest level of service to the community.  


     •     Commander/Administrator, Tactical Response Team - Hampden County Sheriff’s Department

           2001 - Present          

Nick currently leads a squad of elite officers trained to respond to highly critical situations throughout the institution.  


     •     Assistant SuperintendentHampden County Sheriff's Department

2008 - 2011

Nick was appointed to oversee the development and implementation of a Specialized Housing Unit; a dedicated housing area made up of inmates that are preparing to enter back into the community.  Nick developed a re-entry focused program that prepared these inmates to successfully and law abidingly live within the community.


     •     Assistant Deputy Superintendent -Training & Staff Development - Hampden County Sheriff's Department

2004 - 2008

Nick was in charge of the supervision and implementation of training for over eight hundred full and part-time Sheriff’s Department employees.  He oversaw and assisted in the development of the curriculum and coordinated the Western Massachusetts County Correctional Officer’s Academy.

2001 - 2004

Nick managed and supervised a multi-regional Training Academy comprised of recruits from Sheriff's Departments from all four Western Massachusetts counties.  This rigorous curriculum educates, prepares, and trains future Correctional Officers, counselors and caseworkers to work successfully and respectfully not only with the inmate population but also with their co-workers as well as the entire community.  

     


          Sergeant of the Special Operations Unit - Hampden County Sheriff's Department           

2001 - 2004

Nick was responsible for the overall safety, security and integrity of both the staff and inmate populations as well as the institutional confines of the entire correctional center.  He played a key role in the implementation of Facility Disorder Management Plans which were designed to control situations such as riots and disturbances, escapes, weather related incidents, work stoppages, and mass arrests.


     •     Davis Tower Living Unit Sergeant - Hampden County Sheriff's Department                 

          1998 - 2001

As a supervisor of the pretrial offender population, Nick dealt with the numerous issues that arise from the newly incarcerated population still awaiting trial.  He also was responsible the training of the staff assigned to the living units while managing and ensuring the safety of both the inmate and staff populations.  


     •     Corporal of the Special Operations Unit - Hampden County Sheriff's Department           

1996 - 1998

Nick was in charge of training and orientation of newly hired and veteran Correctional Officers on the procedures and protocols of the facility.  Some of Nick's specialty certifications are:  use of force instructor, fire arms instructor, defensive tactics instructor, PR-24 baton instructor, cell-extraction instructor, interpersonal communications skills instructor, mediation certified and mentor facilitator.  


     •     Correctional Officer - Hampden County Sheriff's Department

1993 - 1996

The Correctional Officer is the foundation of the corrections profession.  As a Correctional Officer Nick was responsible for supervising and maintaining controlled living units that housed over seventy offenders.  Nick embraced the department's motto "strength reinforced with decency; firmness dignified with fairness.”  Nick’s biggest strength, which led to his success as a correctional officer, is that he walked and talked side by side with the inmate population on a daily basis.  He understood the offender’s issues and took pride in helping coach the individuals to successful resolutions.  


Nick is a lifelong resident of Ludlow.  He is a graduate of Ludlow High School and he earned his Bachelors of Science Degree in Government from Western New England University.  Nick has also obtained his Masters in Business Administration from Elms College, where he currently serves on their MBA Advisory Council.

Nick is the recipient of several of the Sheriff’s Department awards including; Employee of the Month, The Distinguished Service Award and the prestigious Dodson Award.

Nick is a husband of over 16 years to his high school sweetheart Wendi and father to their three sons, Owen, Max, and Sam.  Often you can find Nick with his boys on the baseball diamond, soccer field and especially in the hockey rinks.  

In addition to having coached Minnechaug High School hockey for 11 years he has coached youth hockey for the Springfield Pics, New England Junior Falcons and currently the Springfield Rifles.  A 2012 finalist for the National Youth Sports Coach of the Year Award, Nick believes that being a positive influence on today’s youth will lead to the betterment of not only their future, but also our entire community.
